The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved the Group Life Assurance Scheme for the 2025/2026 policy year, reaffirming the government’s commitment to the welfare of federal public servants.
Announcing the approval after the council meeting in Abuja, the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Didi Walson-Jack, described the scheme as a vital social safety net that offers financial support to families of public servants in the event of death.
“The Group Life Assurance Scheme is a testament to the importance the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu places on the welfare of public servants,” she said.
In the 2025 national budget, the federal government earmarked about N17.3 billion for the scheme, covering employees of Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs), as well as members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).
Under the scheme, the federal government purchases life insurance policies on behalf of employees. If a covered worker dies, their next of kin receives financial benefits intended to cushion the loss.
The coverage includes the President, Vice President, Ministers, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Chief of Staff, permanent secretaries, staff of all MDAs, and personnel of key security and paramilitary agencies.
Seventeen insurance underwriters have been selected for the scheme, which will run for 12 months from the date of premium payment, in accordance with the “no premium, no cover” policy.
Walson-Jack acknowledged low awareness among public servants and announced plans for a nationwide sensitization campaign to highlight the benefits and encourage broader coverage.
