The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved a revised National Employment Policy aimed at reducing unemployment and poverty while expanding economic opportunities for Nigerians.

The approval was announced on Monday by the Minister of Labour and Employment, Muhammad Dingyadi, after the FEC meeting chaired by President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

Dingyadi said the updated policy incorporates modern strategies aligned with current economic realities, focusing on job creation, inclusive growth, and productive employment across sectors.

“This is a significant milestone for the labour sector. We now have a reviewed and approved National Employment Policy that reflects the needs of today’s economy and labour market,” he stated.

He noted that the old policy had become obsolete, prompting a comprehensive overhaul to respond to global and domestic employment challenges.

“With this new policy, we aim to reduce unemployment, combat poverty, and expand economic opportunities for citizens. It’s a forward-looking document with clear strategies,” he added.

The minister said the policy would be circulated among key stakeholders and institutional partners for effective implementation and monitoring.

Dingyadi also revealed that Nigeria will present the revised policy at the upcoming International Labour Organisation (ILO) conference in Geneva later this month, showcasing the country’s commitment to improving labour outcomes.
