The Federal Executive Council has instructed the Presidential Committee on Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) to accelerate its efforts to supply buses and make conversion kits more accessible to Nigerians.
Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, briefed State House Correspondents after the Council meeting, presided over by President Bola Tinubu in Abuja on Monday.
Idris stated that to tackle the country’s economic challenges, the Council is prioritizing the provision of CNG-enabled buses and enhancing the agricultural sector to boost food production.
He also announced that previously approved conversion centres would be significantly upgraded, increasing the availability of conversion kits.
The minister explained that the development aims to elevate the compliance level with CNG to reduce dependence on petrol and support the transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy.
The minister said, “That is also a discussion on the CNG that the federal government has promised Nigerians. The Federal Executive Council has directed the Presidential Committee on CNG to expedite its activities to supply buses and also make it possible for the conversion kits to be available to most Nigerians.
“Already they have started, but the Federal Executive Council asked them to redouble their efforts so that conversion kits needed for the CNG can be made available.
“Also, the conversion centres that had earlier been approved will be significantly upgraded so that Nigerians will have more conversion centres and conversion kits.
“The compliance level of CNG should go up to reduce our over-reliance on petrol. This will, in turn, aid our energy transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy.”
