A female member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) was reportedly assaulted by teachers at Government Day Junior Secondary School in the Kulende area of Ilorin, Kwara State, on Thursday. The incident allegedly occurred because the corps member failed to greet them properly.

Eyewitnesses claim the corps member, whose name has been withheld, had visited the school to collect her clearance letter when she was confronted by a teacher over her manner of greeting. The teacher allegedly attacked her, tearing her NYSC white T-shirt. Another teacher reportedly joined in, slapping her.

The incident has sparked public outrage in Ilorin, with calls for a thorough investigation and accountability. Many have expressed concerns about abuse of power, professionalism, and respect within educational institutions.

Confirming the incident, Morakinyo Oladipo, the head of Information and Public Relations of the NYSC in Kwara State, said the scheme is taking steps to address the situation. He revealed that the state government, through the Ministry of Youth, had been informed and has initiated action.

“To calm her down and help her overcome the trauma, the corps member will be reposted to another location,” Oladipo said. “The NYSC has expressed its displeasure and is pursuing justice for the assaulted corps member. Necessary steps are being taken, and we are working closely with the state government to ensure the matter is resolved.”

On the possible punishment for the teachers involved, Oladipo stated, “The law will take its proper course. We are expecting a thorough investigation and appropriate action against those responsible for this abuse. The corps member was on a national assignment, and such behavior is unacceptable.”

The NYSC assured the public that the scheme remains committed to protecting the welfare and dignity of all corps members nationwide.
