The Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security has announced plans to collaborate with the Babanna Border Development Agency (BBDA) to enhance monitoring of agricultural activities along Nigeria’s border areas.
The initiative was revealed in a statement by Eremah Anthonia, Director of Information, during a meeting between the Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security, Aliyu Abdullahi, and the agency’s Director-General, Mohammed Garba Danladi in Abuja
Minister Abdullahi highlighted the importance of the partnership, stressing that working closely with the BBDA and the local community would enable the Ministry to better oversee agricultural operations in the border region.
He emphasised the need for comprehensive data on farmers and agricultural activities, including the movement of livestock across the border.
To formalise the collaboration, Abdullahi directed the formation of a Joint Action Committee comprising senior officials from both the Ministry and the BBDA.
The committee will work towards establishing a non-binding Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to outline the terms of the partnership.
Director-General Danladi expressed his enthusiasm for the collaboration, describing the Ministry as a key partner in their efforts to manage agricultural activities and monitor border movements.
He noted that the Babanna Border Development Agency, established by the Federal Government, is responsible for overseeing crop production, marketing, and monitoring the movement of goods and livestock along the Niger State-Benin Republic border.
The partnership aims to enhance agricultural oversight, improve data collection, and strengthen border security in the region.
He, therefore, called for cooperation, support, and partnership with the Ministry to achieve the desired goal.
The Joint Action Committee is to be chaired by the Director Planning and Policy Coordination of the Ministry, Ibrahim Tanimu. He is expected to present a draft Memorandum of Understanding at the next meeting of the Committee.
