The Federal Government has began the demolition of properties obstructing the right of way for the construction of the Lagos-Calabar coastal highway.

The Minister of Works, David Umahi, made this known in Abuja on Sunday in a statement signed by his Special Adviser on Media, Mr. Orji Uchenna.

According to the Minister, the project signifies a significant step in President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope roadmap for economic diversification.

Umahi also assured that the government would execute the demolition with empathy towards affected individuals, emphasizing the importance of compensating property owners promptly.

He further emphasized the government’s commitment to minimizing environmental impact and staying within the coastal boundaries.

Calling for cooperation from those impacted, Umahi urged them to view the demolition as a necessary sacrifice for the nation’s economic advancement.

He stated in part: “The Federal Government is considering the most economically viable way to pass the coastal road without much damage.

“So there would be no delay in the payment of compensation to affected property owners. So I solicit your cooperation to the timeline of the demolition exercise.

“We are doing some minor adjustments, and our commitment is to stay within the coastline.”
