FG begins emergency repairs on two failed Ekiti roads

The Federal Government has commenced emergency repairs on two failed federal roads in Ekiti State following severe disruptions to vehicular movement and economic activities along the routes.

The Minister of State for Works, Bello Goronyo, disclosed this on Tuesday during an inspection of the Ifaki-Oye-Kabba and Efon-Iwaraja roads, where deteriorating conditions had left motorists stranded and disrupted movement.

At a failed section of the Ifaki-Oye-Kabba Road around Oye-Ekiti, several articulated vehicles were reportedly stuck for days. One of the drivers, Quasm Abudu, said he had spent about three days stranded, losing valuable time and business opportunities.

A resident of Oye-Ekiti, Bolade Olowo, described the condition of the road as traumatic, saying its deterioration had disrupted economic activities and raised security concerns among communities along the route.

Goronyo said the Ifaki-Oye-Kabba Road was an important link between the South-West and other parts of the country. He disclosed that a rehabilitation contract was awarded to Gamji in 2025 but said inadequate funding had delayed the contractor’s return to site.

The minister said the government would review the funding arrangement and ensure the contractor was adequately mobilised to resume work. In the interim, the Federal Roads Maintenance Agency had deployed equipment and materials for immediate palliative repairs, he said.

Goronyo also announced a temporary restriction on articulated vehicles entering the Ifaki-Oye-Kabba Road from the Ifaki end while the emergency repairs last. He appealed to motorists to cooperate with the authorities to allow the work to be completed.

At the Efon-Iwaraja Road, which he also inspected, Goronyo directed immediate remedial work and assured residents that access along the route would be restored. He said the interventions were in line with President Bola Tinubu’s directive to address critical road failures nationwide and keep major transport corridors open.
