FG, CAN begin construction of N25bn chapel at Abuja airport

The Federal Government and the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) have commenced construction of a N25 billion ecumenical chapel and pilgrimage centre at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.

The project, initiated as part of CAN’s 50th anniversary celebrations, is designed to provide travellers, pilgrims and airport workers with a dedicated space for prayer and reflection, while also enhancing passenger experience at the airport.

At the groundbreaking ceremony held on Saturday, CAN President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, and Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, alongside other officials and church leaders, outlined the vision behind the initiative.

The facility is expected to be completed and dedicated in October 2026.

Speaking at the event, Archbishop Okoh stated that the chapel would serve as a place of calm for travellers. “A lot of people have challenges when they travel; people need a place where they can come and regain their calm before they enter the aeroplane,” he said.

In his remarks, Akume, who performed the groundbreaking, said the initiative reflects the intersection of faith and development, adding that the investment demonstrates the scale of ambition behind the project.

Also commenting, the aviation minister, Keyamo, said the approval of land for the chapel aligns with Nigeria’s multi-religious character, noting that provision had earlier been made for a mosque at the airport.

Plans for the complex include a 450-seat chapel, a 150-capacity multipurpose hall, a guest house and a tower, with officials stating that the centre will provide travellers a space to pray, reflect and give thanks before or after journeys.
