Vice President Kashim Shettima on Friday flagged off the Federal Government’s inaugural airlift of Nigerian pilgrims to Saudi Arabia for the 2025 Hajj, urging them to uphold Nigeria’s values and dignity throughout their journey. The ceremony took place at the Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport in Owerri, Imo State.
This marks the first international flight from the airport. A total of 64,188 Nigerians are expected to perform the Hajj this year, with 315 pilgrims from Imo, Abia, and Bayelsa States departing aboard an Air Peace flight.
Shettima praised Governor Hope Uzodimma for fostering religious tolerance, calling the event’s location in Imo a powerful symbol of national unity. “His support is heartening and symbolic of a nation coming into harmony with itself,” he said.

The Vice President conveyed President Bola Tinubu’s goodwill to the pilgrims and assured them that the government had made necessary arrangements to ensure a smooth and successful Hajj.
He reminded the pilgrims that they represent Nigeria on the global stage and should conduct themselves with dignity. He also cautioned logistics officers to avoid the operational failures of the past and treat their roles as sacred responsibilities.

Governor Uzodimma described the event as a milestone for Imo, noting that the airport—built over 40 years ago through community effort—had made history. He also announced that Christian pilgrims would be airlifted from the same airport next month.
The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Mohammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, commended the Imo governor for advancing religious tolerance, emphasizing that peace and mutual respect are essential to Nigeria’s progress.

Also speaking, NAHCON Chairman Prof. Saleh Usman hailed the airlift as a regional first and a testament to the governor’s commitment to unity. The event drew dignitaries including Senator Abubakar Sani Bello, Deputy Governor Chinyere Ekomaru, Speaker Chike Olemgbe, and former Governor Ikedi Ohakim.
