FG launches construction of Calabar-Abuja Superhighway

The Federal Government has signed a construction contract with Infiouest International Limited, marking the launch of Section I of the Calabar-Ebonyi-Benue-Kogi-Nasarawa-Apo (Abuja) Superhighway, the third project under the Renewed Hope Legacy Road Projects.

The agreement, sealed in Abuja by the Ministry of Works and representatives of Infiouest, involves the reconstruction of a 118.85-kilometer stretch of road beginning at the Enugu-Abakaliki-Ogoja Highway, part of the Africa Trans-Sahara route. The route traverses Cross River, Benue, Kogi, and Nasarawa states, terminating in Apo, Abuja.

The project includes upgrading the existing road, which comprises jointed asphalt concrete and laterite-surfaced pavements, to a state-of-the-art Continuously Reinforced Concrete Pavement (CRCP). Key locations along the route include Ndibe Beach, Eke Market, Abaomege, Onueke, Ishieke, and Mbeke in Ebonyi State.

Minister of Works David Umahi, who signed the contract on behalf of the government, highlighted the project’s alignment with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

He described it as a transformative initiative aimed at distributing democratic dividends equitably, advancing infrastructure development, and fostering socio-economic growth.

“This is not just a project; it is an investment. The Renewed Hope Legacy Projects are strategically designed to enhance transportation, stimulate trade, and foster inter-regional cooperation,” Umahi said.

The Tinubu administration has already commenced work on two major road projects: the Lagos-Calabar Highway and the Sokoto-Badagry Superhighway.

The Calabar-Abuja Superhighway and the Akwanga-Jos-Bauchi-Gombe Road are the latest additions to this ambitious infrastructure drive.

Umahi noted that the Akwanga-Jos-Bauchi-Gombe Road project, spanning 439 kilometers, was inherited from the previous administration but has been redesigned with reinforced concrete to ensure durability. Work is set to begin using the Federal Government’s counterpart funding by 2025.

The minister also provided updates on ongoing sections of the Sokoto-Badagry Superhighway, including the 258-kilometer Kebbi section and 120 kilometers in Sokoto State.

He reassured Nigerians of the government’s commitment to completing these transformative projects.

Infiouest International’s Managing Director, Joseph Abou Jaounde, expressed gratitude for the opportunity and pledged to deliver on the project.

“This trust in Infiouest is a responsibility we will uphold to justify the confidence placed in us,” he said.
