The Federal Government has unveiled a national Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programme aimed at equipping Nigerian youth with practical skills for employment, entrepreneurship, and nation-building.
According to a statement by Folasade Boriowo, Director of Press & PR at the Ministry of Education, the initiative was launched in Abuja by the Minister of Education, Maruf Alausa, as part of the government’s broader economic recovery strategy under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
Describing the programme as a “pivotal moment in Nigeria’s economic renewal,” Dr. Alausa said the new TVET model would help transform the country into a globally competitive industrial economy.
“Technical skills built Germany’s economy 500 years ago, and they remain Europe’s industrial powerhouse. We can do the same in Nigeria,” he declared.
According to the statement, the programme offers several learning pathways tailored to diverse needs.
Participants can opt for a structured three-year technical track offered through federal and state institutions. Alternatively, fast-track options are available for older or out-of-school individuals, which can be completed in six or twelve months.
Upon graduation, participants will receive multi-level certifications, including those from NABTEB and various industry-recognized awarding bodies. To promote inclusive access, the Federal Government will provide financial incentives to support both mentors and trainees.
Certified artisans serving as mentors will receive a monthly stipend of ₦30,000, while trainees will benefit from ₦22,500 each month. Additionally, graduates will receive starter packs to help them begin work immediately in trades such as plumbing, carpentry, electrical work, and ICT.
