The Federal Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation (FMWRS) has entered into a strategic partnership with Nestlé Nigeria to advance water quality management across the country.
The collaboration was formalized during a courtesy visit by senior executives of Nestlé Nigeria and members of the Organized Private Sector in Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (OPS-WASH) to the office of the Honourable Minister, Engr. Prof. Joseph Terlumun Utsev, in Abuja.
Speaking during the meeting, Prof. Utsev affirmed the Ministry’s commitment to supporting Nestlé’s National Water Quality Advocacy Campaign—a project aimed at raising awareness about the importance of safe water practices and reducing the burden of waterborne diseases in communities.
“Efficient water management is not just about access but also about quality. It plays a critical role in preventing public health threats like cholera and diarrhea, and in reducing the impact of flooding,” the Minister said. “This partnership aligns perfectly with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and our mission to ensure safe water access for all Nigerians.”
The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mr. Richard Pheelangwah, also commended Nestlé’s efforts, particularly the company’s focus on improving water safety through advocacy and community-based action.
Representing Nestlé Nigeria, Corporate Communications and Sustainability Lead, Victoria Uwadoka, highlighted the urgency of improving water knowledge and quality in communities across the country.
“Not all clear water is clean,” she warned. “Our campaign is designed to close the knowledge gap, increase awareness, and promote long-term sustainable water practices. We’re focusing on three pillars: awareness and education, stakeholder engagement, and sustainable action.”
OPS-WASH National Coordinator, Dr. Nicholas Igwe, added that the initiative will provide direct support to communities in both the Federal Capital Territory and Ogun State. “We are going beyond CSR. In Abaji (FCT), 16 communities will benefit, while 8 communities in Agbara (Ogun State) are also part of the project. Two farming communities will also receive water harvesting systems for irrigation,” he revealed.
