FG pegs 16 as official entry age into tertiary institutions

The Federal Government has announced 16 as the official entry age into tertiary institutions in Nigeria.
Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa announced the decision at the opening of the 2025 Policy Meeting of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB).
Alausa noted that the 18-year decision taken at last year’s Policy Meeting has been reversed and replaced with 16 years.
He directed institutions to abide by the new decision, stating that any violation will be met with severe sanctions.
The Minister stated that the integration of National Identification Number (NIN) has come to stay, stressing that it will help to control age falsification.
He also warned institutions against engaging in admission outside the Central Admission Processing System (CAPS), stating that such admissions will be regarded as illegal.
