FG unveils $1bn HOPE-SP, targets sustainable support for vulnerable households

The federal government has launched a $1 billion Household Prosperity and Economic Social Protection Project (HOPE-SP) as part of efforts to shift humanitarian interventions from short-term palliatives to sustainable pathways for recovery, empowerment and self-reliance.

The initiative, themed “From Palliatives to Pathways”, was unveiled on Wednesday by the First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, at the Banquet Hall of the State House, Abuja.

The project was launched by the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction alongside reforms aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s social protection and humanitarian response systems.

Speaking at the event, Tinubu commended the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Bernard Doro, and his team for their efforts to transform government interventions from temporary assistance into sustainable opportunities for vulnerable Nigerians.

She said the initiatives were designed to improve the identification and targeting of vulnerable households, strengthen coordination among humanitarian and poverty-reduction programmes, provide shock-responsive assistance and improve accountability.

According to her, the reforms would help ensure that government support reaches those who need it most while producing measurable outcomes.

Doro said the launch marked a strategic shift in the government’s approach to humanitarian assistance.

“The launch represents a strategic shift from palliatives to pathways, placing vulnerable households, rather than individual programmes, at the centre of government interventions,” he said.
