The federal government has clarified that the visa-on-arrival policy has not been scrapped but is being upgraded to enhance efficiency and security, Minister of Interior Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo has said.
Speaking after a meeting with the Presidential Enabling Business Environment Council (PEBEC) in Abuja, Tunji-Ojo explained that the improved system would require pre-arrival clearance from Interpol, criminal record databases, and other security agencies in real time.
The upgrade aligns with PEBEC’s goal of reducing bureaucratic delays and improving travel procedures for both Nigerians and foreign visitors.
Under the new system, travelers will still be able to apply online for short-stay visas, with approvals granted within 24 to 48 hours.
“The visa-on-arrival process is not being scrapped. Rather, it has been upgraded to improve efficiency and effectiveness,” a PEBEC statement quoted the minister as saying.
Once approved, the visa will be sent directly to the applicant’s email, eliminating the need for a physical sticker upon arrival. This shift toward automation aims to cut inefficiencies and enhance control over traveler inflows.
“With this upgrade, Nigeria takes another step toward improving its business environment and attracting foreign investment,” the minister added.
The enhanced system builds on the existing online approval framework, ensuring a smoother and more secure process for international visitors.
