FG urges U.S. to reconsider new visa restrictions on Nigerians

The Federal Government has appealed to the United States to reconsider its newly revised visa reciprocity policy, which now restricts Nigerian non-immigrant visa holders to a single-entry permit valid for just three months.
The appeal was made in a statement issued by Kimiebi Ebienfa, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, who expressed Nigeria’s concern over the decision, describing it as inconsistent with the spirit of partnership and the long-standing relations between both countries.
“The decision appears misaligned with the principles of reciprocity, equity, and mutual respect that should guide bilateral engagements between friendly nations,” the statement read.
The U.S. recently adjusted its visa policy for Nigerian applicants, affecting key visa categories including B1/B2 (business/tourism), F (students), and J (exchange visitors). The Federal Government said the new rule imposes an undue burden on Nigerian travellers, students, professionals, and families who legitimately engage in travel, education, and cultural exchanges with the U.S.
“This restriction places a disproportionate burden on Nigerian travellers, students seeking academic opportunities, professionals engaging in legitimate business, families visiting loved ones, and individuals contributing to cultural and educational exchanges,” the ministry added.
While acknowledging the U.S.’s sovereign right to determine its immigration policies, Nigeria urged Washington to reconsider the move “in the spirit of partnership, cooperation, and shared global responsibilities.”
Diplomatic efforts, according to the ministry, are ongoing to resolve the matter. The Nigerian government said it remains committed to securing a fair and mutually beneficial outcome.
Meanwhile, the U.S. Embassy in Nigeria clarified that all visas issued before July 8, 2025, will remain valid as originally granted. It explained that the reciprocity policy is part of a global standard that undergoes routine review and is subject to adjustments.
