By Tosin Omojola –
Senegal’s men’s basketball team on Wednesday night ended Nigeria’s D’Tigers’ impressive run at the 2025 FIBA Men’s Afrobasket Championship ongoing in Luanda, Angola.
In a quarter-final clash decided at the Pavilhão Multiusos de Luanda, the Senegalese side triumphed 91-75 to book a semi-final spot and secure automatic qualification for the FIBA World Cup qualifiers.
The Senegalese, who reached the quarter-finals after a playoff win over South Sudan, started on the back foot against the D’Tigers, who had been unbeaten before Wednesday’s encounter.
After losing the first quarter 24-23, Senegal bounced back strongly in the second with a commanding 30-18 win.
They went on to dominate the third quarter 23-13, taking firm control of the contest.
D’Tigers fought back in the final quarter with a 20-15 victory, but it was not enough to overturn the deficit as the game ended 91-75 in favour of Senegal.
The defeat dashed Nigeria’s hopes of clinching a second FIBA Afrobasket title, having last won the championship a decade ago.
