Fire guts staff quarters at Ibadan Polytechnic

A fire outbreak on Wednesday gutted parts of the staff quarters at The Polytechnic, Ibadan, Oyo State, destroying property worth millions of naira.

The fire, which occurred in the early hours of the day, affected three out of four rooms in the building. No casualties were reported.

The General Manager of the Oyo State Fire Service, Mr. Yemi Akinyinka, confirmed the incident, stating that it was caused by an electrical spark following the restoration of power by the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC).

“The distress call was received at exactly 2:26 a.m. on Wednesday, May 7, 2025. Firefighters, led by ACFS Adesina Olusoji, promptly arrived at the scene,” Akinyinka said.

He explained that firefighters, in collaboration with the University of Ibadan Fire Department, were able to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading to nearby buildings.

“The fire severely affected three out of four rooms in the quarters,” he added. “No lives were lost, but properties worth millions of naira were destroyed.”

He reiterated that the fire was triggered by electric sparks after power was restored by IBEDC.
