Fire razes Tejuosho market in Lagos

A devastating fire has swept through Tejuosho Market in the Yaba area of Lagos State, destroying properties worth millions of naira.

The incident which occurred on Wednesday afternoon witnessed an extensive damage, with no reported casualties or injuries.

The fire erupted around 12:30 pm in the market, which houses both shops and residences, along Tejuosho Canal.

According to reports, the blaze started in a room where food was left unattended on a gas cooker. The flames quickly spread to multiple wooden structures, causing panic and forcing residents to flee for safety.

Emergency responders, including LASEMA, the Lagos Fire Service, Nigeria Police, and Lagos Neighbourhood Security Watch, promptly arrived at the scene to combat the fire.

Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, and Mrs. Margaret Adeseye, Director of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, in separate remarks, assured the public that the fire was under control and rescue operations were ongoing.

“Upon arrival at the incident scene, it was discovered that several wooden shanties along Tejuosho Canal were gutted by fire,” said Oke-Osanyintolu.

“Firefighting efforts are ongoing to prevent the fire from spreading to nearby buildings such as NTA, Oba Tejuosho House, and other residential estates in the area. Rescue operations are still in progress,” Adeseye stated.
