Following the Flying Eagles’ 3-1 comeback victory over Niger Republic, Chairman of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) Youth Committee, Alhaji Ganiyu Majekodunmi, stated that the U-20 team’s focus has shifted to securing a World Cup ticket.
Nigeria earned a spot in the final of the WAFU B Championship in Togo and ultimately qualified for the AFCON U-20 Championship.
In his response after Coach Aliyu Zubairu’s squad defeated the Young Menas, Majekodunmi praised the team’s determination and the support from fans across the country.
He noted that the Africa U-20 Cup of Nations qualification is just the beginning, as the committee now aims for a World Cup berth.
“We’ve shown Ghana and others that we are the giants of Africa,” Majekodunmi said. “Our focus now is on the World Cup ticket. We’ll take it one game at a time.”
He emphasized that this achievement is part of a broader vision to uplift Nigerian youth football, adding that strong support from the NFF and the country is essential to keep moving forward.
Majekodunmi also extended his gratitude to the NFF President, Alhaji Ibrahim Musa Gusau, and the NFF Secretary General for their consistent support of the Youth Committee’s efforts.
“I want to thank the NFF President and Secretary General, whose support has been invaluable to our committee,” he said, adding that the achievements so far reflect the entire NFF board’s hard work and collaboration. He commended all board members for their roles, acknowledging that their united efforts are essential to building a future for Nigerian football.
Concluding, Majekodunmi stated, “The journey has just begun.” With ongoing support from the NFF and the Nigerian football community, he believes the Flying Eagles can take Nigerian football to new heights, especially as they work toward securing a World Cup ticket.
