President Bola Tinubu says the economic trade partnership between Africa and China has significantly grown, reaching an estimated $280 billion since 2000, following the establishment of FOCAC.

Speaking at the ongoing Forum on China–Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) meeting in Beijing, Thursday, President Tinubu underscored the significance of this collaboration, describing it as a testament to mutual respect and cooperation that has withstood global challenges.

“Today, we celebrate a partnership that has grown stronger over the decades,” Tinubu said, reflecting on the historical ties between the two regions. “What began as China’s support for African nations’ independence has evolved into a multifaceted relationship that spans economic, cultural, and diplomatic spheres.”

Tinubu applauded China’s commitment to Africa, noting that the establishment of Chinese cultural centres across the continent has fostered deeper cultural connections.

Tinubu said, “China has consistently demonstrated its commitment to Africa, not only through financial and developmental support, but also through cultural changes that bring our people closer and closer together. The establishment of the Institute and Chinese cultural centers across Africa exemplifies the depth of our cultural function and shared learning.

He also credited FOCAC, launched in 2000, as a pivotal platform that has strengthened economic ties and facilitated strategic agreements between China and African countries.

“Despite global economic and geopolitical challenges, our partnership has remained firm,” Tinubu stated. “Trade between Africa and China has grown exponentially, reaching an estimated $280 billion, demonstrating the expanding integration of our markets.”

The Nigerian leader highlighted the alignment of China’s Belt and Road Initiative with Africa’s infrastructure goals under the African Continental Free Trade Agreement, emphasising the potential for further economic integration and shared prosperity.

“At the heart of China-Africa relations is a foundation built on trust, mutual respect, and shared goals,” Tinubu said.

He called for the continuation of peaceful dialogue, transparent business practices, and diplomatic conflict resolution as essential values to guide the partnership into the future.

President Tinubu also thanked the Chinese President Xi Jinping and the Chinese government for their steadfast commitment to the partnership. “As we look to the future, let us continue to build on our shared success, working hand in hand to achieve even greater heights,” he said. “The challenge is ours, and prosperity awaits our nations and future generations.”
