Former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is expected to be among the high-profile dignitaries attending the coronation of the 46th Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Abimbola Owoade I.

The Chairman of the Local Organizing Committee (LOC), Dr. Adekunle Ogunmola, disclosed this during a news briefing at the Alaafin’s palace on Thursday. He confirmed that extensive preparations are underway to host distinguished guests, including ambassadors from Spain, Brazil, Colombia, and Portugal.

The coronation has been scheduled for April 5, with a series of week-long activities set to begin on March 31. The celebrations will feature various cultural and academic events aimed at highlighting Oyo’s rich heritage.

Trudeau’s attendance is believed to be linked to the fact that Oba Owoade holds dual citizenship in Canada and Nigeria. His presence, along with other dignitaries, underscores the international significance of the event.

The festivities will commence with a cultural parade on March 31, setting the tone for an elaborate lineup of events. A Christian thanksgiving service will mark the conclusion of the celebrations on April 6.

A public lecture and colloquium will be held on Tuesday, featuring renowned scholars such as Professors Anthony Asiwaju, Akin Alao, and Siyan Oyeweso, who will provide historical and academic insights into the Alaafin’s legacy.

As part of the cultural showcase, a command performance of Aremo Aderonmu, a stage play written by Gbemi Faleti, will take place at Ajayi Crowther University on Thursday. This will highlight the artistic and theatrical heritage of the Yoruba people.

The official coronation ceremony is set for Saturday, with additional events including historic tree planting from Tuesday to Thursday, a cultural heritage day on Friday, and the inauguration of various projects in honor of the new monarch.
