Four die, seventeen injured in Lagos road accident

Four passengers have been confirmed dead and 17 others sustaining varying degrees of injuries in an accident on the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos on Sunday.

The four passengers were said to be among the nine females who were involved in the accident that occurred around Iyana-Oworo end of the road.

It was gathere that the injured passengers were rushed to the General Hospital, Marina, Lagos, by officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA).

While confirming the casualty figure, Lagos State Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in a statement signed by its Route Commander, Olabisi Shonusi, explained that three of the women died at the scene of the accident, while the fourth person passed few minutes after arriving hospital.

FRSC said that the accident occurred after the passenger vehicle’s tyre burst and the driver, who was overspeeding, could not control the vehicle.

According to the statement, the crash occurred at about 0550hrs when a Toyota Hiace with registration number FST 241 YC. grey in colour, coming from Adekunle inter-change inward Iyana-Oworo had a tyre burst on top speed and capsized with 20 occupants (9 males, 11 females).

“Five of the occupants sustained injuries, while three female adults were confirmed dead at the spot. The additional one female died at the hospital when the FRSC team went for follow-up at General Hospital, Marina,” the statement said.
