FTAN proposes National Tourism Summit to advance industry growth

The Federation of Tourism Associations of Nigeria (FTAN) has proposed a National Tourism Summit to develop strategies for advancing Nigeria’s tourism sector.

The proposal was made during a courtesy visit by FTAN executives to the Minister of Art, Culture, Tourism, and Creative Economy, Barr. Hannatu Musa Musawa, in Abuja over the weekend.

Leading the delegation, FTAN President Mr. Nkereuwem Onung emphasized the importance of strengthening collaboration between the government and the private sector. He highlighted FTAN’s role in unifying private sector associations to support government initiatives in the tourism industry.

“FTAN supports government initiatives, and we acknowledge the significance of public-private partnerships for tourism growth. We are aware of the Honourable Minister’s strategic blueprint for the Art, Culture, and Creative Industry, which now includes Tourism, but our role is to ensure unity between private and public sector associations to foster development,” Onung stated.

He also proposed several key strategies, including the establishment of a Council of Tourism Commissioners to enhance state-level participation in tourism development, the creation of a Tourism Satellite Account to accurately measure the sector’s economic impact, and active participation in international tourism exhibitions.

“The tourism sector’s financial contribution to the national GDP cannot be overemphasized. This is why we propose a Tourism Satellite Account to reflect its true economic impact and seek a reduction in multiple taxation affecting the hospitality industry. There is also a need to revitalize the Presidential Council on Tourism (PCT),” Onung added.

In response, Minister Musawa expressed appreciation for FTAN’s proactive engagement and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to working closely with the private sector to drive tourism growth.

“We will step up engagement with the private sector because collaboration and partnership are essential for the success of the tourism industry.

“The ministry is committed to reviving the Presidential Council on Tourism to serve as a vibrant platform for promoting Nigeria’s tourism industry,” she stated.

Musawa also confirmed ongoing efforts to convene a National Tourism Summit, noting that discussions on tourism development strategies would take center stage at the upcoming National Council of Arts, Culture, Tourism, and Creative Economy meeting in Osogbo next week.

“With Destination 2030: Nigeria Everywhere, the ministry is dedicated to making Nigeria a top tourism destination in Africa. We will work tirelessly to achieve this goal,” she assured.
