Fusengbuwa ruling house shortlists 85 nominees for Awujale throne as race hots up

The Fusengbuwa ruling house, next in line to produce the Awujale of Ijebuland, on Monday commenced its official nomination process as part of efforts to select a successor to the revered royal stool.

The exercise, held on January 12, 2026, at the Bisi Rodipe Hall in Ijebu Ode, brought together princes and princesses of the ruling house who indicated interest in the position.

Delegates from the Ijebu Ode Local Government were also in attendance, led by the Secretary to the Local Government, Mr Abiodun Oke Adebanjo, who observed the proceedings.

At the end of the exercise, a total of 85 princes and princesses who had obtained nomination forms, undergone screening and were duly nominated and seconded were presented by the ruling house. The nominees’ names have been forwarded to the Afobaje, the traditional authority saddled with coordinating the next stages of the selection process.

Some additional aspirants were also listed, but their profiles were yet to be completed at the time of submission.

According to sources at the event, the nomination marks a key step in the traditional process that will eventually lead to the emergence of the next Awujale of Ijebuland, in line with established customs and procedures.

Further actions are expected as the Afobaje begins consultations and statutory processes required for the final selection.
