Gabon military leader Nguema announces candidacy for presidential election

Gabon’s military transitional leader, Gen. Brice Oligui Nguema, who led a 2023 coup that ended 55-years of governance by the Bongo family, on Monday said he would run in the nation’s presidential elections that are scheduled for April 12.
Delivering a speech in Gabon’s capital, Libreville, Nguema said “after careful reflection and in response to your many appeals, I’ve decided to be a candidate in the April 12 presidential election.”
The announcement by the military leader came after Gabon adopted a new constitution following a referendum held in November 2024.
A few weeks ago, the Central African nation passed a new law which allowed military officials to stand in elections, subject to certain conditions.
