Gbenga Daniel faults Abiodun over project claims, describes consensus endorsement as undemocratic

Former Ogun State Governor and Senator representing Ogun East, Gbenga Daniel, has escalated his political rift with Governor Dapo Abiodun ahead of the 2027 general elections, warning that there are “certain lines” politicians should never cross.

The APC chieftain made the remarks during an appearance on TVC News’s programme, “Beyond The Headlines,” where he accused the Ogun State governor of claiming credit for projects initiated during his administration.

The former governor specifically referenced the Ogun airport project, insisting that the most difficult stages of the initiative had already been completed before Abiodun assumed office.

According to him, his administration handled the environmental assessments, project designs, land acquisition, stakeholder consultations and licensing processes, leaving only the construction phase for the current government.

Daniel argued that awarding the construction contract was the easiest aspect of the project, adding that the groundwork had been completed under severe financial constraints.

“If there is anything Dapo Abiodun is enjoying today, it is our sweat,” the senator said, maintaining that his administration laid the foundation for several ongoing projects in the state.

He further claimed that he personally handed over the airport licence to Abiodun after the governor allegedly admitted he was uncertain about how to proceed with the project after assuming office.

The political disagreement comes amid growing controversy over the Ogun East senatorial seat ahead of the 2027 elections, with Daniel challenging Abiodun to a live televised debate over the endorsement of the governor as a consensus candidate for the seat. Daniel described the arrangement as undemocratic, insisting that the ticket should emerge through a transparent primary election process.
