Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq has announced a N100 million support package for the victims of the recent boat mishap, which involved up to 200 people from the Kaiama Local Government Area.
The Governor made the announcement on Thursday during a visit to the Emir of Kaiama, Alhaji Omar Mu’azu (Kiyaru IV).
Governor AbdulRazaq expressed his condolences to the Emir and the people of Kaiama, emphasizing the need for stricter safety measures for water travel.
He also conveyed the condolences of President Bola Tinubu to the monarch and the people of Kaiama, explaining that a delegation from the President was unable to visit Kwara on Thursday due to bad weather conditions that prevented them from flying.
“We are here to once again express our condolences over this tragic incident. May Allah forgive our compatriots who lost their lives in the mishap,” the Governor told the Emir.
“The government is providing N100 million in support to those affected. We are deeply saddened by this tragedy. It is crucial that no one embarks on or disembarks from a boat in Kwara without a life jacket. Violators will face penalties. We also urge the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) to ensure that all passengers use life jackets.”
The Emir commended the Governor for his visit and for previously sending a high-level delegation, led by the Speaker of the Kwara State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Yakubu Danladi Salihu, to the affected community of Gwajibo.
While describing the incident as an act of God, the Emir emphasized the importance of adhering to safety protocols, such as wearing life jackets and avoiding overloading and night travel.
He thanked the Governor for the donation and his continuous support for the people, including efforts to recruit teachers from the local communities.
