Kwara State Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq has approved the naming of several legacy projects, both old and new, after notable figures and leaders who have significantly impacted the state and Nigeria at large.
Topping the list is the First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, after whom the multibillion-naira Civil Service Clinic project is named.
The clinic, currently being rebuilt into a multi-story health facility, will have its groundbreaking ceremony performed by Senator Tinubu during her official visit to Kwara State from January 28 to 30, 2025.
The First Lady will also inaugurate other projects, including the ICT Centre at Kwara State University of Education, built under her Renewed Hope Initiative, as well as the Unity Flyover, the ultramodern Intensive Care Unit, the Executive Ward, and the Gen. Tunde Idiagbon Flyover, named after the late disciplinarian leader.
In addition, the road leading to the flyover will now be called Tafawa Balewa Road in honor of Nigeria’s former Prime Minister.
Other notable naming approvals include:
The ICT Centre at Kwara State University, named after former Minister Amina Ndalolo.
The Executive Ward at the Kwara State Teaching Hospital, named after the late physician and politician Dr. Amuda Aluko.
The first state secretariat, renamed the Brigadier General David Bamigboye Secretariat, honoring the state’s first military administrator.
The new secretariat, named after Rear Admiral Muhammed Alabi Lawal, a former governor (1999–2003).
The Kwara State Stadium Complex, now the Major-General George Agbazika Innih Stadium Complex, with the main bowl named after legendary footballer Rashidi Yekini, Nigeria’s first World Cup goal scorer.
Additionally, Governor Abdulrazaq approved the renaming of key sports facilities within the stadium complex:
Table Tennis Arena: Named after Atanda Musa, a national table tennis champion.
Indoor Sports Hall: Named after Gabriel Babatunde Ladipo, regarded as the father of sports in Kwara.
Squash Court: Named after Coach Bolakale Mogaji, a pioneer squash player and coach.
KFA Academy: Named after Coach Usuman Adenuja, who led the Kwara Academicals to a national final.
Hostel facilities within the stadium also received new names:
Hostel A: Named after Salihu Ishola, the first Kwaran Commonwealth Games medalist.
Hostel B: Named after Bolaji Eniola, a Paralympic badminton bronze medalist.
Hostel C: Named after Bola Esan, the state’s first female director of sports.
Governor Abdulrazaq’s initiative honors the enduring legacies of these individuals and their contributions to Kwara State and Nigeria.
