Ondo State Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa has approved the grant of prerogative of mercy to 77 inmates serving various sentences in correctional facilities across the state.

The approval was given to mark the January 1, 2026, New Year celebrations, following the submission of recommendations by the State Advisory Council on Prerogative of Mercy.

The development was disclosed in a statement issued on Thursday by the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Prince Ebenezer Adeniyan.

Chairman of the council and Attorney General of the state, Dr Kayode Ajulo (SAN), said the beneficiaries were selected after a careful review of their cases.

He explained that factors such as the nature of offences, length of time served, conduct in custody, health status, and prospects for rehabilitation were considered before the recommendations were made.

According to the statement, the clemency includes the release of 12 inmates, commutation of death sentences for 22 convicts, and varying reductions in life and fixed-term sentences for others.

Ajulo described the decision as a humane intervention aimed at reforming the justice system, easing congestion in correctional centres, and supporting the reintegration of reformed inmates into society.
