Governor Kefas gives reasons for moving to APC, says it is for Taraba people

By Kunle Sanni –
Governor Agbu Kefas of Taraba State has explained that his decision to leave the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the All Progressives Congress (APC) was taken in the interest of the people of the state, not for personal or political survival.
Kefas stated this on Friday, January 31, 2026, during his official declaration at the Jolly Nyame Stadium in Jalingo, where he formally announced his defection to the APC.
In his address, the governor said the decision was driven by the need to better position Taraba State to benefit from federal policies, programmes and investments.
According to him, remaining politically isolated would limit the state’s access to critical support needed to address challenges such as insecurity, unemployment, poor infrastructure and economic development.
“This move is not for me; it is for the people of Taraba,” Kefas said, stressing that governance requires alignment and cooperation between the state and the centre to deliver meaningful development.
The governor dismissed claims that his defection was motivated by ambition or self-preservation, noting that the move was made after deep reflection on his responsibility as a servant of the people.
He assured residents that his administration would continue to focus on transparency, equity and inclusive governance.
Kefas also recalled that the event was earlier scheduled for November 19, 2025, but was postponed in solidarity with states affected by the abduction of schoolchildren, particularly Kebbi State. He said it would have been inappropriate to celebrate while families were mourning.
