Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has weighed in on the recent discussions surrounding the proposed inauguration of a Sharia court in the state, stressing the need to uphold the Nigerian Constitution.

The Oyo State chapter of the Supreme Council for Shari’ah in Nigeria had initially scheduled the unveiling of the Sharia court for January 11, 2025, in Oyo town.

The announcement sparked mixed reactions, with some welcoming the initiative, while others, including Yoruba youths, voiced strong opposition.

In response to the controversy, the group announced a postponement of the inauguration ceremony, citing the decision in a statement signed by the Khadimul Muslimeen of Oyo Kingdom, Imam Daud Igi Ogun, on Tuesday.

Governor Makinde, addressing the issue in a video shared on X, clarified his stance, asserting that any law or initiative inconsistent with the Nigerian Constitution would not be accepted in the state.

“We heard they are bringing Sharia matters to Oyo State, stating they want to start a Sharia court in Oyo,” Makinde said.

“I said, well, people may try, but for me in Oyo State, our laws and the Nigerian Constitution are what I swore to uphold. If they are within the law, fine, but if not, I will insist that the law must be followed.”
