Governor Makinde condemns emergency rule in Rivers State

Oyo State Governor, Engr. Seyi Makinde, has condemned the emergency rule declared by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in Rivers State, describing it as an illegality that must be resisted by all right-thinking Nigerians.

WESTERN POST recalls that President Tinubu suspended Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, and the State House of Assembly on Tuesday for an initial period of six months due to the prolonged political crisis in the state. The National Assembly ratified the declaration on Thursday.

Reacting to the development in his monthly newsletter released on Thursday, Governor Makinde expressed deep concerns over the decision, warning that it threatens Nigeria’s democratic principles.

“As our democracy grows and unfolds, we must be willing to speak up when we see anything that threatens our development as a nation. We must choose to stand up for what is right, even if it means standing alone,” Makinde stated.

The governor criticized the suspension of the executive and legislative arms of government in Rivers State, insisting that it undermines the rule of law and democratic governance. He called on Nigerians to reject the move in the interest of fairness, equity, and justice.

“Our democratic tenets must never be trifled with, no matter our personal feelings and loyalties. This is the time to take a stand for fairness, equity, and justice. And I am glad that our great party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), is demonstrating the needed strength and leadership,” he added.

Makinde further warned against complacency, emphasizing the importance of protecting the democratic system Nigeria has built over the past three decades.

“We cannot fold our hands and watch the democracy we built for almost three decades be trampled upon. The time to act is now!” he declared.
