Greater Lagos Fiesta 2025 cancelled as Sanwo-Olu calls for statewide prayers

The Lagos State Government has cancelled the 2025 Greater Lagos Fiesta, with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu calling on residents to observe the period with statewide prayers.

The fiesta, which was scheduled to hold on December 31, 2025 as part of the Countdown 2026 celebrations, was cancelled following the governor’s approval, according to a statement issued on Tuesday by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr Gboyega Akosile.

Sanwo-Olu directed that, in place of the annual celebration, Lagosians should devote quality time to personal and collective prayers for the nation, Lagos State and its people, describing the moment as an opportunity for reflection and spiritual renewal.

He urged residents to pray for continued prosperity, leadership, peace, productivity and general wellbeing across the state.

The governor also wished Lagosians a happy and prosperous 2026, noting that the coming year holds great promise for both Lagos State and Nigeria, and enjoining residents to continue to live in peace and harmony.

“On behalf of my family, I wish every resident of our dear state a happy and prosperous New Year,” he said.

“I want to assure you all that the year 2026 will be a better year for us in the state, as our administration is determined to work twice as hard to deliver the dividends of democracy to the residents of the state.”
