Hamzat: A truly dependable ally! By Olawale Olaleye
The position of a deputy – in any capacity – is typically not a fantastic choice. The success or failure of his career whilst in that office is dependent on his principal.
For an individual whose fate is at the mercy of another, except in cases of “divine” intervention, there’s hardly much to covet except for the illusions of power.
If they are not consigned to mere interior decoration of that office, they are usually not handed any serious assignment for career progression. At other times, they are sculpted to appear “useless” being a spare tyre that may never be used.
But such unfortunate fate of deputies is not the lot of the Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Dr. Obafemi Kadir Hamzat, who is 60 years old today.
For anyone familiar with his pedigree, either in the realm of academics, administration, or politics, you will concur that indeed, Lagos, in 2019, got two for the price of one.
Although gentle, calm, soft-spoken, and self-effacing, he is by no small measure a pushover. Just don’t test his patience.
With a sound mind that’s constantly in tune with current trends in practically all spheres of human endeavour, Dr. Hamzat is just another cosmopolitan public office holder with admirable upbringing.
Perhaps Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, a good listener, too, couldn’t have asked for a better partner with whom he’s been steering the ship of state in the last over five years.
Dr. Hamzat is not the type of person who overreaches himself or puts his principal in a position of discomfort. His decent upbringing is always visibly at play.
In fact, he is an obedient and respectful deputy who has continued to discharge every assignment handed him with thorough and clinical finishes.
Largely because of his background, his predilection for data, facts and figures is a strength that distinguishes him in public service, and has continued to self-develop because of his belief that a better Lagos, nay Nigeria is possible.
Therefore, as he turns 60 today, you can’t but pray for this jolly good fellow, who represents the class of a few decent folks in politics.
Many congratulations, Egbon. Aseyisamodun
