Heavy rainstorm wreaks havoc in Ondo community, leaves residents homeless

By Boye Oyeyemi –

Residents of Elemuletu Community in Akure, the Ondo State capital, have been thrown into distress after a powerful rainstorm struck the area, destroying several homes and leaving many people without shelter.

The storm, which accompanied the first rainfall of February, lasted for about three hours on Monday, according to Pastor Mayegun, an elderly resident of the community.

He said the torrential rain and strong winds tore the roof off a building along Elemuletu Street, off Ijoka Road.

“The wind was so strong that it carried the roof across the street, causing further damage to other houses,” Pastor Mayegun said.

He also noted that the storm destroyed electricity cables and poles, worsening the already dire situation in the community.

Many residents were left exposed to the rain, with their belongings soaked, while others reportedly sought refuge in an unfinished building nearby.

Appealing for help, affected residents urged the government and well-meaning individuals to intervene urgently, calling for assistance to rebuild their homes and provide proper roofing.

“This calamity has left us vulnerable. We need urgent support to recover and protect our families from further hardship,” Pastor Mayegun added.
