Herders seek dialogue with Oyo govt over alleged harassment

The Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore Fulani Socio-Cultural Association has called for urgent dialogue with the Oyo State Government over alleged indiscriminate arrests of its members and seizure of their cattle across the state.

Speaking at a press conference in Akinyele on Tuesday, the state chairman, Alhaji Sanni Muhammed, said the association prefers peaceful engagement to address the situation rather than confrontation, warning that their means of livelihood is under serious threat.

Muhammed lamented that repeated attempts to engage the state’s Rule of Law authorities had failed, prompting the group to appeal directly to Governor Seyi Makinde. He urged the governor to intervene within two weeks to avert further tension.

According to him, members have suffered frequent early-morning raids on their cattle ranches, with some individuals allegedly posing as government agents to extort money through illegal cash transfer demands. He described the situation as discriminatory and unjust.

While acknowledging the state government’s right to make laws, the association urged that such laws be enforced fairly, transparently, and humanely to safeguard livelihoods. They also called for a review of the anti-cattle rearing law to prevent targeted discrimination.

“We are loyal citizens seeking understanding, justice, and protection,” Muhammed said, appealing for an investigation into the alleged harassment and extortion.

The association reaffirmed its commitment to peace, lawfulness, and cooperation with the government, stressing its contributions to Oyo State’s economy, food supply, and social stability.

Also speaking, the Southwest Women Leader of the association, Hajia Aminat Idris, and the Chairman of the National Association of Cattle Dealers, Processors, and Marketers of Nigeria, Alhaji Dauda Adebayo, highlighted the economic and social importance of their members to the state’s development.
