Hon. Obasa, Agege leaders call for unity ahead of nationwide protest

The Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, and other prominent leaders in the Agege area convened on Wednesday to stress the importance of unity, resilience, and patience as Nigeria braces for a nationwide protest.
During the meeting, the leaders engaged with various youth groups, emphasizing that President Bola Tinubu is actively addressing the nation’s challenges.
Dr. Obasa, while highlighting that Agege has significantly benefited from democratic dividends, particularly in infrastructural development, asserted that there was no need for the anticipated 10-day protest which is set to begin on Thursday, August 1, 2024.

“Agege is a special part of Lagos where we are enjoying the dividends of democracy. Our governor is doing a lot for us, and with many developmental projects ongoing, it is essential to remain supportive rather than combative against the government,” Obasa remarked.
He urged leaders to counsel residents, especially the youth, against participating in activities capable of inciting violence. Obasa also called on religious leaders to preach messages of peace, unity, and patience, noting that global crises and inflation are not unique to Nigeria. “The President has been in office for just a year, and resolving these issues takes time,” he added.
Wale Ahmed, a member of the House of Representatives, echoed the call for unity in Agege and expressed confidence that the youth would avoid protests that could turn violent. “Even if provoked during the protest, just ignore,” he advised.
Chief Ganiyu Egunjobi and Johnson Babatunde, chairmen of the two local government councils in Agege, stressed the importance of protecting government infrastructure by abstaining from the protest. Egunjobi recalled the destructive aftermath of the last EndSARS protest, which saw police stations and vehicles set ablaze.
“Let us all communicate and understand each other. The President is just a year in office,” Egunjobi urged.
The Alaige of Agege, Oba Ambaliu Agbedeyi, speaking on behalf of traditional rulers, praised the area’s political leaders for their dedication to residents’ interests and prayed against any evil plots targeting their domains.
