How 32 lawmakers impeached Obasa

The impeachment of the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt(Hon) Mudashiru Obasa by the lawmakers was never a surprise to many who are close watchers of the Institution.
Although, many expected the impeachment before the dramatic event on Monday during the emergency plenary.
It was gathered that the lawmakers stormed the Assembly Complex early to perfect their plan with the only motive of getting Obasa out of office even as he had travelled out to the United States for an unknown assignment.
Sources disclosed that Obasa who travelled with few of his strong loyalists, tried all powers to stop his impeachment but the lawmakers were adamant based on the various allegations of fund mismanagement flying round.
The Sources said that the lawmakers felt embarrassed with the reports and Obasa’s high handed in the Assembly.
In an impeachment motion sighted by WESTERN POST, tagged “Matter of Urgent Public Importance”, the mover of the motion, Hon. Femi Saheed (Kosofe 2) stated that “In line with provision of section 92(2) (C) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, accused Obasa of Gross Misconduct and poor Leadership which included perpetual lateness to Legislative sections and meetings; High handedly and Lack of regard of Honorable Members; Gross abuse of Office and Privileges; Intimidation and Oppression of Honorable Members by inciting Members against one another amongst others”.
Saheed stated that Obasa also practices an authoritarian and undemocratic leadership style in discharging his duties”.
Following the adoption of the motion, the impeachment was made by the 32 Honorable Members through a voice vote.
Subsequently, Rt. Hon. (Mrs.) Mojisola Lasbat Meranda emerged as the new speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly. While Hon. Fatai Mojeed emerged as the Deputy Speaker of the Assembly.
Also, the House suspended the Clerk of the Assembly, Barr. Olalekan Onafeko, and was replaced with Mr. Abubakar Taiwo Ottun as the Acting Clerk of the House.
At the entrance of the Assembly Complex, some policemen were strategically positioned to prevent breakdown of law and order. Some miscreants were arrested and detained in one of the trucks positioned at the entrance of the Assembly Complex.
