How Lagos Assembly Speaker Obasa’s cup became full… and overflowed

The Lagos State House of Assembly’s axe fell on its Speaker, Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, on Monday afternoon. He was impeached through a unanimous decision by 32 members of the legislative body.
Although the impeachment came amid allegations of corruption and financial mismanagement against Obasa, Western Post can report that other underlying issues also informed the removal.
The long and short of the matter, according to analysts, is that Obasa’s cup became full and even spilled over. Among the accusations against him is the controversial claim that he authorized the expenditure of N17 billion on a gate for the Assembly complex—a move critics described as exorbitant and fraudulent.
Obasa has also been accused of mismanaging constituency funds and failing to execute approved projects, further fueling dissatisfaction among Assembly members.
Further details on the reasons behind the impeachment and its implications are expected to emerge in the coming days. However, many leaders in the state agreed that Obasa had overstepped his bounds and outlived his welcome.
He allegedly carried on with iron hands, operated like an emperor, and treated the House members like servants. On many occasions, the Speaker reportedly disrespected governors, with his relationship with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu being particularly strained.
The last straw came during the 2025 budget presentation by Governor Sanwo-Olu. Speaker Obasa, in his speech, excoriated the governor, disrespected his office, and asserted his status as a bona fide Lagosian. He also called out everyone linked with the 2027 governorship race, including Seyi Tinubu, son of President Tinubu, challenging them to disclose their lineage.
While claiming he had no interest in the Lagos governorship race, he compared himself to former governors Fashola, Ambode, and Sanwo-Olu, asserting his qualification for the role.
With that, it became clear to all that his days as Speaker were numbered.
