President Bola Tinubu has reaffirmed his commitment to serving Nigeria, stating that his administration is focused on addressing the nation’s pressing challenges.
Speaking at a meeting with the Forum of Former Presiding Officers of the National Assembly on September 20, Tinubu emphasized that his goal is to deliver results, not personal gain.
This was contained in a statement by issued on Friday by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser on Information and Strategy to President Tinubu.
“I didn’t come to look for money and exploit the situation; I came to work. I asked for the votes, and Nigerians gave them to me,” the President, a former senator, told the gathering after a session of camaraderie with his former parliamentary colleagues.
The meeting, attended by 16 former presiding officers, including former Senate Presidents and House of Representatives Speakers, was led by former Senate President Ken Nnamani.
Tinubu expressed his gratitude for their support, regardless of party affiliations, urging them to continue promoting unity to help achieve Nigeria’s development goals.
Reflecting on the nation’s current challenges, the President acknowledged the hardships but called for self-reflection on how past governance contributed to the present situation.
He lamented the neglect of vital sectors like education and community development, noting, “We forgot to educate our children. Go around and look at the dilapidated schools.”
Tinubu highlighted his administration’s focus on improving infrastructure, ensuring financial regulation compliance, and exploring alternative energy sources.
He reassured Nigerians that despite the difficulties, his administration is determined to do its best to resolve the nation’s problems.
Speaking on behalf of the Forum, Senator Nnamani expressed full support for the President’s efforts to tackle insecurity, economic downturn, and infrastructure decay.
Nnamani praised Tinubu’s leadership, particularly his handling of local government autonomy, which has earned widespread admiration.
“As difficult as these problems are, we believe that with your experience, you can face the difficulties and surmount them,” Nnamani said, pledging the Forum’s support in nation-building efforts.
The meeting marked the first official engagement between the President and the Forum since his assumption of office.
Nnamani commended Tinubu for appointing some of their members to key national positions, recognizing their contributions to nation-building.
