‘I want to become principal officer’ Desmond Elliot reveals reason for Lagos Assembly 4th term
The lawmaker representing Surulere Constituency 1 in the Lagos State House of Assembly, Desmond Elliot, has explained why he is seeking a fourth term in office ahead of the 2027 elections.
Speaking during a campaign meeting with supporters on Friday, Elliot said his decision to seek re-election was driven by his ambition to become a principal officer in the Assembly.
In a video circulating on social media, the three-term lawmaker urged his supporters not to yield to intimidation from rival political camps ahead of the All Progressives Congress primary election scheduled for May 21.
“The question is, what am I looking for in the fourth term that I am being intimidated to step down? Don’t accept it, you have invested so much in me. There is a high chance that I will become a principal officer,” he said.
Elliot also appealed to party members in his constituency to support him during the primary, expressing confidence that he would emerge victorious.
The development comes amid reports that some APC stakeholders, including allies of Femi Gbajabiamila, are backing a former aide to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Barakat Odunuga-Bakare, to challenge Elliot for the party’s ticket.
Earlier on Friday, Elliot publicly apologised to Gbajabiamila during an appearance on TVC’s “Your View,” saying any offence caused during previous political disagreements was unintentional.
He described the Chief of Staff to President Bola Tinubu as his political mentor, adding that he learnt politics under him and remained committed to party unity despite past tensions linked to the Lagos Assembly leadership crisis.
