I went to court to restore my dignity, not to fight PDP- Lamido

Former Jigawa State Governor, Sule Lamido, says he approached the court to reclaim his right to contest leadership positions within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Speaking during an interview on Channels TV’s Politics Today on Friday, Lamido described the legal action as a personal fight to restore his dignity, not an attempt to undermine the party.

“I went to court not because I have anybody in mind; I went to get my rights back, which were taken by my party. The issue is about my personality, dignity and honour being restored, more than anything else,” he said.

Lamido expressed disappointment over the internal divisions within the PDP, lamenting that a party once defined by unity and trust had become marred by internal conflict. “I won the case, fair enough, but it is tormenting that the case I won is about my party — about our unity, our family. A family that was once so cohesive and loving is now eroded. We are simply fighting, and I feel very sad. Let the problem be solved,” he said.

He also explained that he could not withdraw the suit since a judgment had already been delivered.

Lamido insisted he would not attend the PDP national convention scheduled for 15 November in Ibadan, Oyo State. “This is very clear. For someone saved by the court, I can’t go where there is an injunction on the convention. If I go, I would be renouncing what I gained in court. The court gave a clear order that the convention must not hold, so how do I go there?” he said.

Reflecting on the party’s dwindling strength, he noted that the PDP had reduced from 14 governors to just three. “We were 14 governors under the PDP Governors’ Forum led by Bala Mohammed. Under Damagum today, we are only three — and even two of them are leaving. The problem came from the governors. They have a wrong notion of themselves, thinking they are now fully in charge,” he said.

Lamido stressed that he was not desperate to become national chairman but believed he could contribute to rebuilding the PDP’s structure and restoring its former stability.
