Ibadan Airport to shut down for six months for upgrade – NCAA

The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has announced plans to shut down Ibadan Airport for six months to allow for maintenance and upgrade works.

The Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Mr. Michael Achimugu, disclosed this on Friday via his official handle on X, stating that the temporary closure is expected to begin in early March.

“Subject to new information, Ibadan Airport may be shut down for six months for maintenance and upgrade, starting from early March,” Achimugu stated.

The upgrade is part of the federal government’s plan to transform Ibadan Domestic Airport, Alakia, into an international airport. In June 2024, President Bola Tinubu approved the move to enhance the airport’s infrastructure and expand its operational capacity.

Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, had earlier confirmed the planned upgrade, stating that the project would include the expansion and extension of the runway, as well as a comprehensive overhaul of the airport’s facilities. According to him, the improvements will enable the state to begin receiving international flights.

Makinde also announced in January 2025 that the construction of a new international terminal was underway as part of efforts to meet global aviation standards.
