The ancient city of Ibadan has declared a 21-day mourning period following the death of the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, who passed away on Monday, July 7, 2025, at the age of 90.
In line with the city’s long-standing tradition, the mourning period officially began on Tuesday, July 8, and will last for three weeks. During this time, all cultural and ceremonial activities in the city are expected to be suspended as a mark of respect for the late monarch.
The process of selecting a new Olubadan will begin at the conclusion of the mourning period. According to tradition, the Otun Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, is next in line to ascend the throne.
The formal nomination will be made by the Balogun Olubadan, Oba Tajudeen Ajibola, with the backing of the Osi Olubadan, Oba Eddy Oyewole.
The meeting to finalize the selection is expected to hold soon at the new Olubadan Palace in Oke-Aremo, Ibadan.
