IGP Disu restructures Police Force, shuts down RRS, SWAT, Anti-Robbery squads

The Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, has ordered the immediate disbandment of all special police units and squads across the country as part of a sweeping reform of the Nigeria Police Force.
The directive affects several tactical formations, including the Rapid Response Squad (RRS), Anti-Cultism, Anti-Kidnapping, Scorpion Squad, Tactical Intelligence Response Squad (TIRS), Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT), Monitoring Units, Tiger Squad, Gender Units, and Anti-Robbery squads.
Personnel from the affected units will be redeployed to conventional policing duties such as patrol operations, guard assignments, Divisional Crime Branch (DCB), Juvenile and Women Centre (JWC), and general beat duties.
According to the police, the restructuring is aimed at overhauling the system and improving operational efficiency through a return to standard policing structures.
Observers have noted that the move responds to growing public concerns over alleged human rights abuses, extortion, and extrajudicial activities linked to some of the disbanded tactical units.
The police high command emphasised that the reforms will prioritise professionalism, accountability, and stronger community engagement in law enforcement operations.
