IGP warns against unlawful detention, reaffirms commitment to human rights

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has issued a strong directive to all personnel of the Nigeria Police Force, emphasizing the importance of upholding fundamental human rights in pre-trial detentions.

In a statement signed on Sunday by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the IGP stressed that compliance with legally stipulated detention periods is not only a legal requirement but also crucial in safeguarding the dignity and personal liberty of individuals, as enshrined in Sections 34 and 35 of the Nigerian Constitution.

He warned against unlawful or prolonged detentions, noting that such practices erode public trust and confidence in law enforcement. Officers found violating these principles, he said, would face serious consequences.

The IGP urged police personnel to foster a culture of accountability and uphold the highest standards of professionalism in their interactions with the public.

By prioritizing human rights, the Nigeria Police Force aims to strengthen its relationship with the communities it serves and ensure that policing is carried out with integrity and respect.

The statement reaffirmed the commitment of the current police leadership to enforcing the law while protecting the rights and dignity of all individuals.
