Super Eagles forward, Kelechi Iheanacho, was overjoyed on Thursday evening after scoring his first goal for Spanish giants Sevilla.
Sevilla cruised to a 3-0 victory over Las Rozas in their Copa del Rey opener at Dehesa de Navalcarbon, marking a successful debut for Iheanacho, who joined the team from English Premier League side Leicester City.
Reflecting on his performance, Iheanacho expressed his satisfaction at finally breaking his goal drought for Sevilla. “I’m very happy to have scored my first goals for this club,” he told El Sevillista. “It’s great for my confidence and that of the team, which hopefully will finish in the top six.”
Looking ahead to Sunday’s match against Real Sociedad, Iheanacho added, “I hope we win. We really want to secure a victory at the Sánchez-Pizjuán, and the support of the fans will be crucial.”
Sevilla’s win sends them through to the second round of the competition, building momentum ahead of their La Liga clash against Real Sociedad.
The match began with Las Rozas, a fourth-division side, aiming to control possession but struggling to make a meaningful impact in the final third. It took Sevilla some time to find their rhythm, with the first shot coming in the 30th minute from Lagreca, whose right-footed effort sailed wide over the crossbar.
Sevilla found the breakthrough just before halftime, six minutes before the whistle. Juanlu sent a well-placed ball out to Idumbo on the right wing, whose cross into the area was inadvertently deflected by Las Rozas’ Luis Enrique, resulting in an own goal that gave Sevilla a 1-0 lead at the break.
In the second half, Sevilla’s head coach, García Pimienta, made his first change, bringing on Kike Salas for Marcao as Las Rozas showed signs of fatigue. Sevilla soon capitalized on this advantage when Iheanacho opened his scoring account in the 60th minute, coolly finishing a setup to make it 2-0.
Despite Las Rozas attempting a comeback, Sevilla’s goalkeeper Álvaro made two crucial saves, preserving the team’s clean sheet. Newcomers Isra Domínguez and Álex Collado were also introduced, marking their official debuts for the club.
With just ten minutes left on the clock, Iheanacho was alert in the box, completing his brace by seizing on a blocked shot from Peque to secure Sevilla’s third goal of the night.
