Ikirun residents protest alleged sale of market land

By Deborah Oladejo, Osogbo –

Residents of Ikirun, in the Ifelodun Local Government Area of Osun State, on Sunday protested the alleged sale of a section of the historic Monday Market, a major economic and cultural hub in the community.

The protesters, who marched to the market square, called on the Ikirun Elders-in-Council, the Osun State Government, and the Ifelodun Local Government Chairman to protect the property from encroachment.

The individual accused of purchasing the land has been invited by the council chairman for a formal meeting on the matter, local sources reveal.

It was learnt that the Chairman of Ifelodun Local Government, Hon. (Alh.) Hassan Kamoru Okanlawon, had visited the market to inspect the disputed portion and assured protesters that the council remained committed to safeguarding public assets and preserving the heritage of Ikirun.

Community leaders have urged residents to remain calm while the council engages all parties involved, stressing the need to allow due process to take its course.

For generations, Monday Market has served as a vibrant trading centre in Osun State, attracting merchants and buyers from across the region every week.
