Ikwerre, Eleme council secretariats in Rivers set ablaze (Videos)

-Shooting in Obio Akpor

Arsonists have set Eleme and Ikwerre Local Government Secretariats in Rivers State on fire following the local government elections on Saturday.

Videos made available to WESTERN POST show fire burning in buildings at Eleme and Ikwerre local government councils. Another video captured gun shots at Obio Akpor local council secretariat with people running helter skelter.

The Eleme LGA secretariat blaze was reportedly set up by a device thought to be dynamite which set fire to nearby buildings and cars. Protesters in Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni LGA broke into the council headquarters in Omoku, preventing the just sworn-in chairman from taking up his duties.

Rivers State has been in crisis before and in the build up to the October 5 council elections marred by explosions at the APC Secretariat.

The latest arson and violence comes on the heels of the directive issued on Monday by Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun, calling for the immediate removal of police officers who had been stationed in the council since July, as well as the unsealing of the 23 LGs’ secretariats.
